Thirroul Beach
About the Beach
You'll find a kilometre of sandy beach backed by parkland and a charming village. The free saltwater pool sits right beside it, open from 6am with 10 lanes and a toddler pool. It's perfect for lap swimmers and families dodging the rips. Thirroul Station is a quick walk away, so you can train from Sydney without parking stress.
The village has real character: boutique shops, independent cafes, and Anita's Theatre, a heritage 1925 building with live music. Sealed parking's at The Esplanade, but it fills fast on summer weekends, so come early or head down on a weekday.
Consistent swell all year draws surfers. The main beach break suits beginners and intermediates, while Sandon Point at the south end is one of NSW's best right-handers. Grab lessons or boards from Illawarra Surf Academy. Lifeguards patrol the beach, but six rips across the sandbar, especially down the southern end, make the ocean serious. Stay between the flags or use the pool.
Weekday mornings beat the crowds. Rock platforms attract fishers, and dogs are welcome on-leash at certain times.
Conditions at 6:33 am
Clean southerly winds around 5km/h with a large 1.5m swell from the east. A cool 16°C in the air with cool 20°C in the water, and a falling tide. Cloudy skies with a minimal UV index of 0.
