Coogee Beach
About the Beach
Coogee is a crescent-shaped bay between two rocky headlands. Wedding Cake Island sits roughly 1 km offshore and shelters the bay from big swells, keeping conditions noticeably calmer than most Sydney beaches. It's quieter than Bondi, with cafes and dining options right beside the sand.
Don't let the calm look fool you. The shore drops off steeply and the shore break hits hard. You can lose your footing within a few steps. Rips also form at both headland ends. Swim between the flags. Lifeguards patrol year-round.
You'll find four ocean pools scattered around the headlands. One, built in 1886, is exclusively for women and children. You're at the southern end of the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, a 6 km clifftop route. Head north five minutes to Gordons Bay for an underwater nature trail popular with snorkellers. Parking gets tight on weekends, but buses from the city take around 25 minutes.
Conditions at 9:20 am
Strong south-westerly winds around 27km/h with a large 1.5m swell from the south. A cool 15°C in the air with comfortable 21°C in the water, and a falling tide. Cloudy skies with a minimal UV index of 0.

Getting There
Coogee, 2034, NSW
Buses 373 and 374 run from the city to Arden Street, about 30 to 40 minutes from the CBD. Express routes 373X and 374X cover the same corridor at peak times. There's no direct train, so if you're coming by rail, get to Bondi Junction and jump on a bus from there. Street parking exists near the beach but it gets very tight on weekends, so the bus is the smarter call.
