Semaphore Beach
About the Beach
Head down to Semaphore for a proper seaside day without the Glenelg crowds. The wide white sand stretches out backed by the iconic 585-metre jetty. You'll find real character in the 1920s Art Deco buildings, the historic Timeball Tower, that old-school seaside resort vibe you don't find much anymore.
The water's calm and shallow, brilliant for families. Gentle waves mean this is a swimming beach, not a surf spot. Watch for holes and channels in the sandbars, and bring shoes if bare feet worry you (sharp shells cut). Dolphins show up regularly from the jetty end. Lifeguards are on during summer.
There's heaps to do beyond the water. Vintage carousel (southern hemisphere's oldest), steam train, mini golf, waterslide. Walk the foreshore bike track, fish from the jetty, catch the westward sunsets over Gulf St Vincent. It's one of Adelaide's best dog-friendly beaches. Only 14km from the CBD, 20 to 30 minutes by car, or catch the train from Glanville.
Heads up: seaweed piles up on shore sometimes, and the foreshore gets heaving during the Kite Festival and peak summer.
Conditions at 5:11 pm
Light north-westerly winds around 13km/h with a small 0.3m swell from the west. A cold 14°C in the air with cold 17°C in the water, and a rising tide. Cloudy skies with a minimal UV index of 0.
