Moffat Beach
About the Beach
Moffat is squeezed between Dicky Beach to the north and Shelly Beach to the south. No esplanade, no high-rises, no crowds. Just a compact stretch of sand backed by a small grassy park and a handful of houses. A proper neighbourhood beach.
The headland at the southern end is worth exploring. Walk around the rocky point at low tide and you'll find rock pools full of crabs, sea urchins, and small fish. The headland walk connects through to Shelly Beach, with elevated views back along the coast.
Surf-wise, Moffat picks up a similar swell window to Dicky Beach. The right-hand point break here can be punchy, especially on a solid east swell at mid-tide. The crowd skews heavily local and beginners are rare.
It's unpatrolled, so watch for strong rips, the rocky headland at the southern end, and the rock platform at the northern end. Facilities are basic. Head up to Seaview Terrace for a brewery and a strip of cafes, a short walk from the sand.
Conditions at 2:53 pm
Strong south-easterly winds around 26km/h with a moderate 0.9m swell from the east. A mild 22°C in the air with comfortable 23°C in the water, and a falling tide. Cloudy skies with a minimal UV index of 2.
