Kings Beach
About the Beach
Kings Beach is Caloundra's main patrolled beach, and it earns that status. The beach faces southeast at 135 degrees, which means it picks up small south-southeast swells well, making it a solid spot for learner surfers. Afternoon onshore winds can mess things up, so mornings are your best bet.
Head up to the northern end and you'll find a free 25-metre saltwater pool, open year-round from 4am. There's a kids' wading area right beside it. At high tide, waves wash over the pool wall, keeping the water fresh. Rock pool regulars are doing laps at dawn before families arrive. From the headland lookout nearby, you can see the Glass House Mountains on a clear day.
Be aware of the hazards. Strong rips sit at both ends of the beach, and there are rocks at the northern and southern ends. Lifeguards patrol daily year-round, so swim between the flags.
Parking is paid and metered, check the signage for any free-period zones nearby. Toilets and cafes are on site.
