Balmoral Beach
About the Beach
Balmoral is a sheltered harbour beach in Mosman, split in two by Rocky Point Island, connected by a concrete bridge built in 1930. It faces northeast across Middle Harbour, so you watch ferries and yachts drift past. Moreton Bay figs shade the esplanade, full of parrots and cockatoos.
No rips, no waves. The water stays flat and shallow, well-suited to kids and less confident swimmers. Head to the southern end for the shark-netted Balmoral Baths, an enclosed swim off a pier. There's a rock pool at the northern end too. No lifesavers patrol here, so watch children yourself.
Kayakers, SUP boarders and snorkellers make good use of the calm bay. Gear hire is available from the water sports centre on the esplanade. The heritage Bathers' Pavilion does fine dining and an upstairs champagne terrace. For something cheaper, there's a fish and chips takeaway nearby.
Parking is expensive and fills fast in summer. Metered spots on Awaba Street uphill from the beach are slightly cheaper. Bus 246 from the CBD is the smarter option on a hot day.
Tomorrow's Forecast
Expecting strong southerly winds around 24km/h with a large 1.5m swell from the south-east. Cool 18°C in the air expected with comfortable 21°C in the water, and a falling tide. Rainy conditions with a minimal UV index of 1.
