Brunswick Heads Main Beach
Live conditions and scores
Head down to Brunswick Heads Main Beach and you'll find 10.5 km of wide, flat coastline with soft golden sand and a firm bottom underfoot. The dunes are tree-shaded with native vegetation bordering the beach and picnic areas tucked alongside. It's far less crowded than Byron Bay, with a genuine village atmosphere that's crusty and characterful.
The water has rip currents, so stick to the patrolled zone when lifeguards are around (weekends and public holidays, September to April). Outside patrol season it's unpatrolled, so you need to be careful. Surfers come year-round for Bruns Bar, a legendary break near the river mouth that works for all skill levels. Check tide charts before heading out, as conditions shift daily. You can rent boards at the local surf shop.
The firm sand and gentle gradient make it brilliant for families and people with mobility needs. Sand-cruiser wheelchairs are free to hire from the Community Centre (book 24 hours ahead, 02 6685 1498). Showers and toilets are at multiple entrances. Grab a sourdough from Bruns Bakery or explore the other eateries in this walkable town.
