Tugun Beach
About the Beach
Tugz, as locals call it, is the Gold Coast's 70s throwback. Original beach shacks and retro holiday flats still line the beachfront, and the crowd is almost entirely local. If you're after Surfers Paradise energy, look elsewhere.
The hard-packed sand stretches long and flat, with northward views of the Surfers Paradise skyline. Elephant Rock sits at the northern end, Flat Rock at the southern. Swim between the flags near Tugun SLSC and it's great for families, toddlers included. But stay clear of the ends. The permanent rip at Elephant Rock on the northern end is no joke, and Flat Rock channels rips across the inner bar.
It's a consistent beach break with lefts and rights along the full length, uncrowded year-round. June is peak, when clean east swells combine with southwest offshore winds on roughly half the days. The Oceanway coastal path runs directly behind the beach if you're on foot or bike.
Conditions at 5:22 pm
A fresh southerly breeze around 18km/h with a solid 1.3m swell from the east. A mild 21°C in the air with warm 24°C in the water, and a rising tide. Clear skies with a minimal UV index of 0.
