Seventy Five Mile Beach
About the Beach
Seventy Five Mile Beach stretches 120 kilometres up the eastern coast of K'gari (Fraser Island). It's a gazetted highway, so you'll share the sand with 4WD traffic moving fast all day long. Time your creek crossings carefully at low tide.
The surf here is powerful and completely unpatrolled. Strong rips, shore breaks, and sharks are genuine hazards in these waters. Add bluebottle stingers, strong currents, and high tides to the mix. No wonder most people stick to wading at creek mouths or floating down Eli Creek instead of risking the open surf.
You'll drive past the rusting hull of the Maheno shipwreck, stranded since 1935, and Indian Head, a rocky headland where you can spot turtles, rays, and whales in season if you're patient and keep an eye out.
Dingoes roam the island and they're wild animals, not pets. Keep food secured and stay clear of them, especially with kids in tow.
Tomorrow's Forecast
Expecting light north-westerly winds around 14km/h with a pumping 2.1m swell from the east. Mild 23°C in the air expected with warm 24°C in the water, and a falling tide. Rainy conditions with a minimal UV index of 1.
