Seventy Five Mile Beach
Live conditions and scores
Seventy Five Mile Beach stretches the entire eastern length of K'gari (Fraser Island), roughly 120 kilometres of open ocean shoreline on the world's largest sand island. The beach is a gazetted highway, so you'll share the sand with 4WD traffic, not just other swimmers. Time your crossings at creek mouths carefully.
The surf is powerful and largely unpatrolled. Rips and shore breaks are a genuine risk, and sharks are a presence in these waters. Most people wade at creek mouths or float down Eli Creek rather than swim in the open surf.
Along the drive you'll pass the rusting hull of the Maheno, a shipwreck stranded here since 1935, and Indian Head, a rocky headland where you can spot turtles, rays, and whales in season.
Dingoes roam freely on the island. They're wild animals, not pets. Keep food packed away and never approach them, especially with kids around.
