Mindil Beach
About the Beach
Mindil Beach sits about 2 km from Darwin's CBD, a west-facing strip of yellow sand backed by the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. You'll be surprised how pretty it is this close to a city.
Most people come here for the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, not the water. Thursday and Sunday evenings through the dry season (late April to late October, 4 to 9 pm), around 200 stalls take over the beach reserve with 60-plus food stalls covering everything from Sri Lankan and Filipino to Indonesian and Aboriginal Australian. Grab a camel ride at sunset, catch fire twirling, and browse Aboriginal art and handmade crafts.
Swimming is possible in the dry season but take it seriously. Saltwater crocodiles are in these waters, and box jellyfish are active from around October through May. Check current patrol times with Surf Life Saving NT before getting in.
On market nights, arrive early. Free parking fills fast and good sunset spots go quickly. Bring a blanket, cash for the stalls, and mosquito repellent for dusk.
Conditions at 10:26 am
A fresh south-easterly breeze around 19km/h with a tiny 0.0m swell from the north-east. A warm 27°C in the air with warm 27°C in the water, and a falling tide. Clear skies with a moderate UV index of 4.
