Lucky Bay
Live conditions and scores
Lucky Bay sits inside Cape Le Grand National Park, about 50km east of Esperance. It has been scientifically verified as having the whitest sand in Australia, tested via spectral analysis by Murdoch University researcher Noel Schoknecht. The sand is 98.7% pure quartz, fine-grained and bright white against turquoise water.
Western grey kangaroos are regularly seen lounging on the beach, particularly at dawn and dusk, though sightings have become less reliable as visitor numbers have increased. If you want the best chance, come early morning before the crowds.
The bay faces south and is partially sheltered by the islands of the Recherche Archipelago offshore. Swimming is good on calm days, with a gentle gradient into the water. Snorkelling around the rocky edges of the bay is excellent in clear conditions. The water is cold year-round, peaking at just 20 degrees in February.
This is unpatrolled beach in a region with a documented elevated great white shark presence. Several fatal attacks have occurred at nearby Esperance beaches in recent years. There are no shark nets or patrols. The bay is remote with limited phone reception, so tell someone your plans.
